At Organics Beam, we understand that every hair type is unique—just like you. Wavy, curly, coily, kinky… each hair type has its own unique needs.
You've probably already heard of the hair classification scale: from 2A to 4C. But what does it really mean? And most importantly, how can you adapt your routine based on your hair type? We'll explain everything, with love, expertise... and kindness 💛
🌀 The hair classification scale: what is it exactly?
This ladder was popularized in the 90s by André Walker, hairdresser to legends — including Oprah Winfrey herself ✨.
It helps you better understand the natural shape of your curls: light waves or ultra-tight afros? This changes everything when it comes to care.
Here's an overview of the types, from 2A (light wavy) to 4C (very tight kinky):
🔸 Type 2: Wavy hair
2A – Light wavy
Almost straight hair with very slight "S" waves.
Needs: lightness, avoid weight
Advice: gentle shampoo, moderate hydration, light products.
2B – The well-defined “S” shaped wave
More frizz, more pronounced waves.
Needs: definition, frizz control
Tip: Daily moisturizing spray, avoid harsh brushes.
2C – Very pronounced wavy
Almost curly! The volume is there, and so is the frizz.
Needs: more intense hydration, definition
Tip: Leave-in moisturizer + light styling cream.
🔸 Type 3: Curly hair
3A – The wide and flexible loop
Wide, often shiny spiral curls.
Needs: nutrition + definition
Tip: LOC (Leave-in, Oil, Cream) routine recommended.
3B – Tighter, springy curls
Thicker texture, tendency to dry out.
Needs: daily hydration, gentle detangling
Advice: weekly deep treatment, co-wash between two shampoos.
3C – Very tight, almost curly curls
Lots of density, lots of volume.
Needs: nutrition ++, tip protection
Tip: Regular oil bath + protective hairstyles.
🔸 Type 4: frizzy and curly hair
4A – Tight “S” shaped loops
Mini spirals, very absorbent.
Needs: ultra-hydration, rich products
Tip: Gentle co-wash + weekly hair mask.
4B – “Z” texture, less defined
Significant shrinkage, natural volume.
Needs: Seal in moisture with an oil or butter
Tip: Use rich vegetable butters.
4C – Very tight, poorly defined texture
Ultra-frizzy, ultra-beautiful. Fragile, therefore precious.
Needs: Intense hydration, minimal handling
Tip: low manipulation styles, scalp massages, satin at night.
✨ How to know your hair type?
🔍 Tip: Wash your hair, let it dry naturally without product, and observe its shape.
💡 You can also have multiple textures on your head — this is completely normal!
